The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course introduces students to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely. Through this course, the students will learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, pistol shooting fundamentals, and pistol shooting activities. The Basic Pistol Course will also help prepare the student for participation in other NRA courses. This course meets the training requirements to apply for your Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit.

Course Outline

  • Lesson I: Pistol Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling
    1. State the course goals
    2. Identify the principal parts of a pistol and the types of pistol actions, and demonstrate how they function
    3. State, explain and apply the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling
    4. Demonstrate how to handle a pistol in a safe manner
  • Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge and the Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
    1. Identify the different components of a pistol cartridge
    2. Explain the firing sequence of a cartridge
    3. Explain how to properly identify and store ammunition
    4. State the major types of cartridge malfunctions and how to react to them
    5. Explain the fundamentals of pistol shooting
  • Lesson III: Shooting Positions and Shooting Qualifications
    1. Demonstrate the learning steps to assume the benchrest position, and shoot from the benchrest position with the SIRT Laser Pistol
    2. Demonstrate the learning steps to assume the Isosceles position, and shoot from the Isosceles position with the SIRT
    3. Shoot the Qualification with our special guns and ammunition
  • Lesson IV: Scoring Targets, and Selecting and Maintaining your Pistol
    1. Properly score a pistol target
    2. Explain the basic guidelines for selecting and purchasing a pistol
    3. Identify the materials needed to clean a pistol
    4. Demonstrate how to safely clean a pistol
  • Continued Opportunities for Skill Development
    1. Identify several ways to pursue pistol shooting activities after the course
    2. Successfully complete the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course written examination

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course - Blended. You have completed the Online BoPS course, have your special access code, and have your partially completed Performance Checklist that we will complete for you on the range. This course meets the training requirements to apply for your Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit.

  • Perform the Independent Handling exercise
  • Perform the Pistol exchanging exercise
  • Perform the Loading, Cocking, De-cocking, and Unloading exercise
  • State Range Safety rules and information
  • Identify Range Commands
  • Demonstrate the benchrest position and shoot with SIRT Laser Pistol
  • Shoot the NRA BoPS Qualification with our special UTM guns and ammo
  • Perform the Pistol Maintenance exercise

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is an official NRA course, and it has certain cost requirements associated with it. In order to cover those costs, we are charging $65 which is about a buck and a half more than what we pay. We also thoughtfully give you the option to donate more money on top of that.
